‘A meme by Svea Maus is like falling into the abyss of petty bourgeoisie, a book by Svea Mausolf is a rollercoaster ride through hell. Brilliant and enchanting.’
Stefanie Sargnagel
Peggy Brinkmann has more than one problem. Her parents recently cut off the perpetual student's financial support. At 37, it's high time she stood on her own two feet. Peggy has to find a flatmate for her expensive rented flat. She now shares the kitchen and bathroom with Martin, who paints his fingernails but isn't gay. When her long-term girlfriend also breaks up with her, Peggy ends up at Image, a dingy corner pub, and in the arms of waitress Veronique. A rapid chain of events begins, culminating at the engagement party of Peggy's sister and Christian influencer Jenny.
IMAGE is a dark, bitterly angry satire on a brutalised society in which moral boundaries have long been crossed. The tension in the novel oscillates between black humour, grotesque exaggeration and brutal reality. In the end, the question remains: who is the real monster here? Svea Mausolf looks into the dark corners of society, illuminating the abyss and devoting herself to the disgust and all the unsympathetic peculiarities of people in late capitalism that we are only too happy to repress.
Svea Mausolf is an artist, comedian and author of various comedy formats such as Kroymann. She gained fame
