PA69 – the “PA” is pronounced in English and the “69” in German – are a rap group from Berlin. Very little to nothing is known about the identities of the three pink-masked rappers DJ DOPE, Rabatto, and Turbogianni. What is considered certain is that they grew up in the Berlin suburbs and in the northeastern German countryside.
Further rumors about the identities of the three members (youth basketball coach, combat diver, Michelin-star chef, wedding DJ, doctor of law, or freestyle king) and the meaning of the acronym PA69 cannot be confirmed with certainty.
PA69 – whose “PA” is pronounced in English and “69” in German – released their first tape, Tape Nr. Zwei, back in 2020. Shortly afterward, their track Kingmische became their first genuine underground hit. Following their initial shows at Goa open-airs and in Berlin pub basements, the release of Biertornado in 2023 led to their own sold-out club tour. In their hometown of Berlin, PA69 played a sold-out show at SO36 in early 2024, followed by another sold-out concert at Astra Kulturhaus at the end of the year; a further show at Columbiahalle has already been announced. Meanwhile, PA69 have attracted an increasingly diverse audience far beyond Berlin’s city limits, performing multiple sold-out tours and appearing at major festivals such as Splash!, Fusion, Spektrum, Pangea, and Dockville. In short: the PA69 phenomenon is becoming impossible to ignore.
The fact that the people behind PA69 are so hard to pin down gives the three rappers tremendous freedom to slip effortlessly into different roles. Lyrically, they play with anti-styles and bizarre worlds of reference—the stranger, the better. While many other artists in the rap scene focus on coolness, toughness, and wealth, PA69 deliberately present themselves as uncool. They playfully flaunt everything others look down on: provincial life, fingerboards, fake luxury watches, or supermarket loyalty points. In short, PA69 are masters of what journalist Alex Barbian has called “ironically Dadaist distortion.”
At the same time, their euphoric, slogan-like rap conveys an intoxicated, hedonistic zest for life that places them within the cosmos of Berlin’s “Atzen rap.” The influence of certain Berlin rap icons is unmistakable—listeners are reminded again and again of K.I.Z.’s promo album, DJ Reckless, Corus86, or the Atzen duo Frauenarzt and Manny Marc. However, PA69 never punch down: unlike much of German rap, their punchlines are never directed against women or minorities. They enjoy playfully flirting with the risk of being misunderstood. During the 2025 federal election campaign, however, the three rappers became unusually explicit, combining “party frenzy and subtle political message” (ZEIT Online) in their anti-AfD song Komplett Blau.
Live, PA69 deliver an especially energetic show. Always present: a hype man in a sun costume—animator, warm-up act, and dancer all in one—carefully arranged intros built from pop-cultural samples, and the now-iconic Biertornado circle pit. With this show, PA69 will embark on a major XXL tour across Germany at the end of 2025.
